It has been a bit quiet recently in terms of new movie trailers coming out. Though, with 2018 on the horizon and awards season ramping up, we should start getting some more looks at upcoming films. One that caught our eye a few days ago is the new drama/thriller from director Lynne Ramsay, You Were Never Really Here.
Described as a “21st century Taxi Driver,” the film stars Joaquin Phoenix as Joe, a brutal enforcer tasked with rescuing a missing teenage girl (Ekaterina Samsonov). The trailer also shows Joe discovering corruption behind the girl’s disappearance. The trailer has a sinister feel to it and Phoenix is all business throughout. Judging by the actor’s work over the past few years, this film shouldn’t be written off as a spin on something like the Taken series.
An adaptation of Jonathan Ames’ novella of the same name, You Were Never Really Here premiered at the 70th Cannes Film Festival in May. There, Ramsay came away with the Best Screenplay award while Phoenix nabbed Best Actor. The film is being produced by Amazon Studios who’ve had great critical reception with films like Manchester by the Sea, I Am Not Your Negro, and, most recently, The Lost City of Z.
You Were Never Really Here is set to open in theaters on April 6th, 2018. Check out the trailer and comment below.
