The day is finally here. After being deprived of one of Spider-Man’s greatest villains time and time again (his pathetic appearance in Spider-Man 3 doesn’t count), we’re finally going to get a solo movie based on the character. Today, the first Venom teaser dropped and, wow, was it underwhelming.
When it was announced that Tom Hardy would be playing the character of Eddie Brock/Venom, it kind of felt like an odd choice. Hardy is a fine actor and all but he seems a bit old for the role. Either way, at least a reputable actor was cast. In the trailer, you don’t really get to see all that much as it’s just Hardy’s voiceover with him lumbering around or screaming in an MRI chamber. There’s no sign of him as the titular anti-hero/villain. Though, there’s one quick glimpse of the alien symbiote that allows Brock to become Venom lashing around in a sealed chamber. So, that was kind of cool.
Whatever happens with Venom is going to be very interesting. While Marvel and Sony have joined forces to bring fans a suitable Spider-Man to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Venom is strictly a Sony affair. At this point, it’s basically a spin-off to a Spider-Man movie that doesn’t exist. If things go well with this film, Marvel could try to bring him into the MCU but, at this point, that remains to be seen. Even if Marvel wanted to use Venom, again, Tom Hardy is quite a bit older than current Spidey, Tom Holland. Obviously, they could make it work but, knowing Marvel, they’ll probably just stay the course with their own ideas.
Even though the teaser is extremely underwhelming, it at least gets you excited that the film is finally going to happen. Michelle Williams, a great actress in her own right, has been cast to star next to Hardy too. The film is set for release on October 5th. Check out the Venom teaser and comment below.
