It has been nearly a year and a half since it was announced that Academy Award winner Alicia Vikander was cast as Lara Croft. Today, the first trailer for the upcoming Tomb Raider reboot has finally been released.
The franchise has seen a bit of a resurgence in recent years. In 2013, the video game series received a reboot on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. A sequel was released two years later and both games were critically acclaimed. As for the film series, Lara Croft hasn’t been heard from since 2003. Though, with this reboot, that’s about to change. Previously, Angelina Jolie played the character in two negatively reviewed films: Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life.
Judging by this first trailer for the reboot, it looks alright but a bit uninspired. Lara Croft (Vikander) is tasked to seek out a tomb by her recently deceased father (Dominic West). She must find and seal it before a rival company otherwise the world will be in danger. While watching the trailer, it’s impossible not to think about the Indiana Jones series. Unfortunately, that will always be the downfall of these kind of films. That’s not to say that it won’t be good but let’s hope that the filmmakers can add their own flair to this adventure.
Tomb Raider opens in theaters on March 16th, 2018. Check out the trailer and comment below.
