Back in July, we covered the first trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s newest film, The Shape of Water, and it quickly ascended Cinema Smack’s most anticipated films of 2017 list. Well, the second trailer for the film has now been released and nothing has changed.
The criminally underrated Sally Hawkins stars as a mute woman named Eliza. Along with a co-worker (Octavia Spencer) in a high security laboratory, she discovers a creature simply known as The Asset (Doug Jones). She befriends and eventually tries to free him from the lab with help from a few others.
The new trailer has a slightly different feel than the first but the movie still looks like it will be awesome. There’s a more playful feel to this new trailer than the previous one but it still maintains the dark/tragic fairy tale vibe that del Toro has become known for. His work on films like Pan’s Labyrinth and Hellboy have made him one of the most unique visionary minds in the business.
Like we stated in our write-up for the first trailer, it’s not often that del Toro has a new release on the way. When he does, though, it’s worth paying attention to. The Shape of Water is an original screenplay written by both del Toro and Vanessa Taylor. Along with Hawkins, Spencer, and Jones, the film co-stars Michael Shannon, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Richard Jenkins.
The Shape of Water is set to open in theaters on December 8th. Check out the second trailer and comment below.
