Now that Netflix has gotten their Defenders series out of the way (we’re going to get to that one soon), it’s time to start their next phase of the expanded Marvel Cinematic Universe. Despite new seasons of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist on the way, Netflix isn’t quitting there. The first trailer for The Punisher has dropped and it looks to be the darkest installment of the Marvel television shows.
Of course, the upcoming series won’t be our first introduction to the character. His first appearance came in the lackluster 1989 film, The Punisher, which starred Dolph Lundgren in the role. Two more critically panned films, released in 2004 and 2008, also featured the character. Jon Bernthal was cast as Frank Castle/The Punisher in Daredevil Season 2. He also returned in The Defenders. Bernthal, best known for his role as Shane in AMC’s The Walking Dead, gave a chilling performance as Frank Castle but also did a good job as a sympathetic character whose family was murdered. His lone motivation is to punish criminals with cold blooded murder.
The upcoming Netflix series looks as if it will delve more into the background of the character that wasn’t fully addressed in Daredevil or The Defenders. Castle’s past has been talked about within the MCU but never fully shown. The plot of the show supposedly follows Castle as he discovers a conspiracy behind the attack on him and his family. The trailer doesn’t allude to much but effectively uses Metallica’s Grammy nominated song, “One”, perfectly to set the tone of the show. While Netflix’s other Marvel properties have been brutal at times, none of them should compare to what it looks like they’re going to do with The Punisher.
Oddly enough, the trailer doesn’t reveal a release date for the show. All that we know thus far is that the show will release sometime in 2017. Check out the first trailer and comment below.
