Sigh… Another day and another new superhero movie. Maybe this is becoming the norm but it’s so hard to get excited over the never ending supply of them coming out. What’s even harder is to get excited for a new one from 20th Century Fox that isn’t Deadpool 2. Instead, the first trailer for the X-Men spin-off, The New Mutants has been released. As usual, it looks interesting but, knowing Fox’s penchant for screwing up the majority of their superhero properties, there’s no reason to hold your breath.
Ever since X-Men 2, Fox has been unable to produce a solid outing for the mutants. Sure, X-Men: First Class and Days of Future Past were decent enough despite some screwy timeline manipulation but every time they take one step forward, they take three back. With The New Mutants, it looks like Fox will dabble with the horror genre a bit too. Directed By Josh Boone, from The Fault in Our Stars fame oddly enough, the film focuses on a group of five teenagers who are being held in a secret facility as they learn to use their mutant powers.
At first glance, the cast is promising. Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Heaton, and Maisie Williams have all found success in their young careers so far. Rounding out the five mutants are Henry Zaga and Blu Hunt who makes her feature film debut. The most notable cast member from the trailer is Alice Braga as Dr. Cecilia Reyes. She looks to be playing a Nurse Ratched from One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest type of character. You can assume that she will be the main antagonist judging by the trailer.
The New Mutants opens in theaters on April 13th, 2018. Check out the trailer and comment below.
