When you think of giant monster movies, what’s the first thing that comes to mind. Godzilla, right? Maybe King Kong? From there, it’s an extremely big drop-off in quality and popularity. Sure, there are films like Cloverfield and Super 8 that were somewhat popular but many agree that the monsters in those movies were the worst parts. Recently, the first trailer for a new monster movie was released in The Great Wall.
So, the question now is why would anyone make a monster movie set at the Great Wall of China and cast Matt Damon in the lead role? Better yet, why does he look like Robin Hood? Judging by the trailer, Damon appears to be the only non-Asian actor in the film. It reeks of Tom Cruise in The Last Samurai.
Now, before anyone gets offended, there’s nothing wrong with Matt Damon. He typically isn’t the worst thing about any of his movies. It just doesn’t make sense other than to “Americanize” it enough so that Western audiences will go see it. If that was the case, why not have it not take place at the Great Wall?
Anyway, the film is supposed to be about why China decided to build the wall. Obviously, it’s not based on truth which tends to further pose questions over the location and casting. Regardless, it doesn’t look to be the worst movie ever made. It’s just strange.
The film is directed by Zhang Yimou (Hero starring Jet Li) with Damon in the lead role. Pedro Pascal and Willem Defoe also have roles. The Great Wall is slated for release on February 17th, 2017. Check out the trailer and comment below.
