For as much as we’ve talked about Netflix and their upcoming superhero mashup, The Defenders, it’s about time that we’re able to share some footage from it. The first full trailer for the television show has been released today.
For those unfamiliar, The Defenders is a team-up of lesser known Marvel heroes. It’s a faction similar to the Avengers, though, the Defenders are only trying to save New York from the corrupt. The team consists of Daredevil (Charlie Cox), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage (Mike Colter), and Iron Fist (Finn Jones). Of course, all four heroes have already had their own respective series air on Netflix prior to this mashup. Other characters set to reprise their roles from the previous series’ are Elektra Natchios (Elodie Yung), Misty Knight (Simone Missick), Claire Temple (Rosario Dawson), and Colleen Wing (Jessica Henwick). Sigourney Weaver also joins the cast for this go-round.
Unfortunately, not much is really known in terms of who or what the team will be fighting. Each hero has had their own issues in their respective shows with some overlap of characters and events. This new trailer shows the team as they unite yet little is made of the show’s overall premise. While Daredevil and Jessica Jones have been critically acclaimed, Luke Cage and, especially, Iron Fist have been met with less fanfare. At this point, it’s safe to wonder if The Defenders will be more of the former or the latter. Without dropping any hints about the story, it’s hard to really assess where the series is going.
The Defenders premieres all eight of its episodes on Netflix on August 18th. Check out the trailer and comment below.
