Netflix has released the first trailer for its new show, Stranger Things and it looks pretty interesting. It definitely doesn’t look like its set in the modern day judging by the trailer as well as the throwback style poster that was released for it.
The plot is centered around the disappearance of a young boy. His mother (Winona Ryder) is convinced that there is some foul play afoot in the seemingly small town but the police aren’t convinced. The boy’s friends run into a young girl who recognizes the boy in a photograph and claims that he’s “hiding.” On top of all of that, there are a lot of supernatural occurrences (specifically with electricity) that look to play a big part in the show.
By the look of the trailer, Stranger Things has a type of Stephen King vibe to it. It seems similar to something like Stand By Me mixed with the small town and supernatural elements of works like Salem’s Lot or Dreamcatcher. There haven’t really been too many films like this recently (Super 8 is the only one that really comes to mind) so it could be an opportune time for a show to be released.
As we all know by now, Netflix has been able to produce some very good television over the past few years. House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, Hemlock Grove, Bloodline, and Daredevil (among others) have all been positively received and Stranger Things looks to continue that trend for the on demand streaming service.
All eight one-hour episodes of Stranger Things premiere on Netflix on July 15th. Check out the trailer and comment below.
