It has been almost four months since the last trailer for Spider-Man: Homecoming was released. Today, sees the arrival of its second trailer ahead of its summer release date.
While the first trailer mostly focused on Tom Holland’s Peter Parker/Spider-Man, this new one relies heavily on Peter’s relationship with Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) along with the film’s villain, Vulture (Michael Keaton). Stark acts as a father figure to Peter and tries to dictate Spider-Man’s role within the Avengers. As everyone saw in Captain America: Civil War, Holland’s portrayal of the web slinger was entertaining and refreshing. The first two trailers for Homecoming include more of this and it’s easy to get excited for more Spider-Man especially alongside Iron Man.
That being said, this film already looks like it’s going to throw a lot at its audiences. Instead of being a strict reboot of the franchise, it’s definitely built to enhance the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While it’s nice that Marvel has the rights to the character on film once again, it’s also disheartening that there’s a good chance we still may not see Spidey up against classic villains like Mysterio, Kraven, Venom, or Carnage. Being a part of the Avengers could eat up any attention the filmmakers could put into the true Spider-Man universe that fans have been mostly deprived of. Obviously, this is speculation but, due to this film’s Avengers-heavy approach, it seems less likely that we’ll get the aforementioned villains anytime soon. At least casting Michael Keaton to play Vulture in Homecoming is a bit of a treat.
We all know that the MCU has taken pretty good care of our favorite heroes despite severely lacking in quality villains. It’s doubtful that Spider-Man: Homecoming breaks that mold. It’ll probably be charming, funny, and all things Marvel either way. Hopefully, they stay the course with Spider-Man and finally do give us a definitive Spidey universe along with the pit stops in the Marvel supergroup.
Spider-Man: Homecoming opens in theaters on July 7th. Check out the new trailer and comment below.
