Can anyone believe that it’s the middle of September already? With only a few months left in the year, it’s time to start getting hyped for new movies coming out in 2018. So long, 2017, it has been fun. With that, an intriguing trailer for Francis Lawrence’s upcoming thriller, Red Sparrow, dropped recently and there’s plenty to get hyped about.
Born in Austria, Lawrence got his start as a music video director. He has worked on videos for a number of pop artists including Justin Timberlake, Jennifer Lopez, and Britney Spears. His feature film debut came in the form of 2005’s Constantine which was followed by I Am Legend in 2007.
Lawrence is most well known for his work on The Hunger Games series. He directed every film but the first and the series went on to make over $2.9 billion worldwide. With Red Sparrow, the director reunites with his Hunger Games star, Jennifer Lawrence (no relation). This time around, the female Lawrence plays ballerina Dominika Egorova who’s recruited as a “sparrow,” or Russian spy, where she’s required to use her body to seduce her enemies. The film is based on the book of the same name written by Jason Matthews.
The first comparison that is sure to be made is to Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan. Like Swan, Red Sparrow looks to be a dark, yet elegant, thriller about a ballerina. Not to mention, they have similar titles. Yet, the trailer for this new film looks to put that conversation to rest. It uses Joel Edgerton’s character’s monologue to give a quick synopsis and put plenty of distance between this film and Aronofsky’s psychological thriller. Regardless, the brief 90 second look at Lawrence’s new project is filled with tension and style. It definitely has the potential to be a hit early next year.
Red Sparrow is set for release on March 2nd, 2018. Check out the trailer and comment below.
