Well, another children’s television show is slated for a feature film reboot in 2017. The past decade has seen the release of Transformers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and G.I. Joe. Now, it’s time for Power Rangers to get its reboot.
The original show, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, spawned numerous different offshoots as well as its own feature film. The ridiculously popular 1990’s television series is remembered for its colorful main characters, hilariously bad villains, and its mechanical Godzilla-like battles to save the town of Angel Grove. The teaser trailer for this new vision of the series seems to highlight on those things while also attempting to take them seriously.
Of course, it also appears that Power Rangers will be getting a bit of the Michael Bay treatment. Aesthetically, it looks eerily similar to the aforementioned Transformers and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. This is despite Bay’s name being nowhere near the film. While it’s nice to see that this new attempt will be focusing on the characters from the original TV show, it’s also hard to think that this reboot is necessary. After all, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers was hardly original as it used footage from a Japanese series to pad its runtime.
Another minor gripe with the teaser is the usage of the characters themselves. The rangers are spun as outcasts which is hard to believe. There’s something seriously wrong with the elite of Angel Grove if these normal looking teens are the black sheep of the town.
Regardless, the film looks intriguing even though it simply feels like we’ve seen this all before. Hopefully, the filmmakers attempt to do justice with this reboot and not just use it to sell piles of merchandise. After all, quality name actors such as Bryan Cranston, Elizabeth Banks, and Bill Hader were cast as Zordon, Rita Repulsa, and Alpha 5.
Power Rangers is set for release on March 24th, 2017, with Dacre Montgomery, Naomi Scott, Ludi Lin, RJ Cyler, and Becky G. cast as the titular characters. Check out the teaser and comment below.
Dood I’m actually pretty excited for this. I’ve yet to get taken by the string of Michael Bay, childhood reboots so it feels like I’ve saved this energy for this. A full on, original power Rangers reboot. I’ll follow this closely. Thanks assbutt
