One of the most groundbreaking and influential films of all time was 1933’s King Kong. It’s no surprise that we’re set to receive another iteration of the eighth wonder of the world in Kong: Skull Island.
The last time we heard anything from Kong was in Peter Jackson’s 2005 remake of the original film. This new film is actually the second in Legendary Entertainment’s Godzilla-Kong film series. The first film was 2014’s Godzilla with Godzilla 2 and Godzilla vs. Kong in 2019 and 2020 respectively.
Skull Island appears to be another origin story. A group of explorers venture to the unknown island which is inhabited by natives, skull crawlers, and Kong himself. While it’s unfortunate that this film is going to be another rehash, the cast leaves a lot of room for optimism. Academy Award winner Brie Larson, Academy Award nominees Samuel L. Jackson and John C. Reilly, John Goodman, and Tom Hiddleston make up the bulk of the main cast.
From the trailer, the effects look quite good as should be expected on such a big budget production. The ape is gigantic and it’ll be easy to see him as an imposing threat to Godzilla when they finally match up. The film itself looks as if it could be decent but, again, it’s a bit of a letdown that it’s another origin story.
Kong: Skull Island opens in theaters on March 10th, 2017. Check out the trailer and comment below.
