Ever since the release of the original Toy Story back in 1995, Pixar has mostly run the table on CGI-animated films. Disney and Dreamworks have also had very successful runs with films like Frozen and the Shrek series respectively. Meanwhile, a young company called Illumination Entertainment has quickly made a name for itself with its animated films. Most specifically, Illumination has made a killing with their Despicable Me series and looks to continue its reign with Despicable Me 3.
The first film was released in 2010 on an estimated budget of $69 million. Its worldwide gross ballooned to over $540 million. The second film performed even better with over $970 million. Last, but certainly not least, the prequel film, 2014’s Minions, surpassed a whopping $1 billion worldwide. So, yeah, it’s safe to say that the Despicable Me series is quite popular.
It’s no surprise then that a third film is in the works. The first trailer focuses heavily on a new villain named Balthazar Bratt, voiced by Trey Parker. Bratt carries some heavy 80’s influence as he hijacks a ship singlehandedly. To the rescue are the series protagonist, Gru (Steve Carell), and his wife, Lucy (Kristen Wiig). For the most part, that’s the gist of the trailer overall.
In all honesty, it doesn’t really feel much like a trailer. It’s more like a clip from the actual movie. That being said, it does a good job of setting up Bratt and reintroducing some of the main characters. One thing to note is that the IMDb page for the film mentions that the plot will include Gru’s twin and that they’ll have a sibling rivalry. Though, this is nowhere to be seen in this trailer.
Either way, like its predecessors, Despicable Me 3 stands to make a good amount of money at the box office for as long as the series maintains its quality. The film opens in theaters on June 30th, 2017. Check out the first trailer and comment below.
