2017 is shaping up to be a huge year for sequels and remakes. While every year has plenty of these two types of films, this year just seems to have more oomph behind them. Films like Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Stephen King’s It, and even the upcoming Alien: Covenant (although it probably won’t be that good) are heavily anticipated on our end. Well, you can add another one to that list with Blade Runner 2049.
The original Blade Runner, directed by the sometimes overrated and sometimes brilliant Ridley Scott, has been polarizing for moviegoers since its release in 1982 despite its status as a science fiction classic. It’s not surprising based on the five different cuts of the movie that have been released over the years. With all of the questions left at the ending of the original, it’s also no surprise that a sequel has been talked about for years.
Luckily, director Denis Villeneuve gives us a visual feast in this first full trailer for 2049. It kind of looks like Ghost in the Shell a little bit which isn’t a bad thing. We also get introduced to more characters than in the teaser back in December. Jared Leto appears to be the main villain and is pretty creepy in the first scene of the trailer. There are glimpses of Robin Wright, Felicity Jones, and even Dave Bautista as well.
Of course, who can forget Harrison Ford and Ryan Gosling. Firstly, it’s awesome that Ford is resurrecting one of his popular characters once again. It appears that he may actually play a role similar to Han Solo in The Force Awakens. It’s like a symbolic passing-of-the-torch type of role. Ryan Gosling has quickly built himself up as one of the most consistent actors in Hollywood and he has been excellent in nearly every film he has starred in. Needless to say, anticipation is at a high with this film.
Blade Runner 2049 opens in theaters on October 6th. Check out the trailer and comment below.
