Last year, Disney released a live action version of Cinderella. A few weeks ago, it was The Jungle Book. Now, Disney has dropped the first teaser trailer for another upcoming adaptation of one of their classic animated films: Beauty and the Beast.
Originally released in 1991, Beauty and the Beast was a hit at the box office and was the first animated film to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture. It was also selected for preservation in the National Film Registry back in 2002.
The accolades of the original animated film are definitely going to cast a huge shadow over this new live action one. On top of that, Bill Condon was hired to direct this effort. If you don’t know who that is, he is the visionary behind such films as Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Parts 1 and 2.
All kidding aside, Condon most certainly has his work cut out for him not only because of this film itself but because of how great The Jungle Book was. If Disney’s overall goal is to take their existing properties and release new versions of all of them, then they are definitely off to a solid start. If Condon is able to knock Beauty and the Beast out of the park, they’ll be even better. With names like Ian McKellen, Ewan McGregor, Emma Thompson, Stanley Tucci, and Emma Watson as the main character, Belle, this adaptation definitely has a cast that’s able to exceed expectations.
Beauty and the Beast comes out on St. Patrick’s Day in 2017. Until then, check out the trailer and comment below.
