At this point, everyone should know about the newest “car” film coming out this spring. Yes, there’s another installment to The Fast and the Furious series coming out for some reason. However, we’re here to talk about an upcoming “car” film that you may not have heard about. Acclaimed director of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, Edgar Wright, readies his new film, Baby Driver, for release in August.
If nothing else, at least Baby Driver seemingly has its focus on car chases and character development as opposed to bloated action sequences. The film features Ansel Elgort as a getaway driver being forced to do a job for a crime boss played by Kevin Spacey. He tries to leave his life of crime behind and relocate with a waitress he meets who’s played by Lily James.
Unlike most of Edgar Wright’s previous films, this one doesn’t seem to rely on slapstick comedy. It feels like a legitimate and realistic action film driven by its star power. Starring alongside Elgort, Spacey, and James are underrated names like Jon Bernthal, Jon Hamm, and even Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Academy Award winner Jamie Foxx also plays a role in the film.
That being said, the film’s trailer is a bit lacking in quality and substance. It simply doesn’t look like something a lot of people would want to rush out and see. Though, the film did have a positive reaction at South by Southwest earlier this month. Either way, Wright has proven himself to be a quality filmmaker in the past and it wouldn’t be surprising if the film is better than its trailer leads on.
Baby Driver opens in theaters on August 11th. Check out the trailer and comment below.
