First of all, let’s get something out of the way. John Wick and its sequel are both awesome action films. Keanu Reeves is believable and likable in his role as a deadly retired hitman. That being said, Atomic Blonde looks as if it will be capitalizing on the success of John Wick with Charlize Theron in the role of an undercover MI6 agent.
It’s not all that surprising that both films have a similar feel to them. David Leitch serves as director on Atomic Blonde and was also an uncredited director on the first John Wick. This time around, though, Leitch’s main character has more of a task in front of her than just a dead dog. Agent Lorraine Broughton is sent to investigate the murder of a fellow agent and recover a list of missing agents during the Cold War. Also along for the ride is David Percival who’s played by the ever-fantastic James McAvoy. Sofia Boutella, John Goodman, and Toby Jones also have roles in the film.
The best thing about this first trailer, by far, is the action. Like its spiritual predecessor, Atomic Blonde boasts some stellar action sequences which show Lorraine as being vulnerable but never a victim of defeat. The trailer’s opening fight has some amazing camerawork that has been lost upon the action genre. Instead of messy shaky cam and incessant cuts, the scenes are allowed time to impress via their choreography. It feels like something out of Park Chan-wook’s Oldboy which is definitely a compliment.
As of now, we’re highly anticipating Atomic Blonde. The film is set for release on July 28th. Check out the NSFW trailer and comment below.
