We love the weird and mysterious here at Cinema Smack and here’s a trailer for an upcoming film that certainly fits that description at the moment. The first look at Alex Garland’s new film, Annihilation, has been released and it’s definitely a bit out there.
Garland, of course, wrote and directed 2014’s science fiction thriller Ex Machina. In that film, a man becomes infatuated with a beautiful humanoid AI. It’s eerie, suspenseful, and pretty awesome to say the least. With Annihilation, the eeriness is definitely back as Natalie Portman stars as a biologist who signs up for a secret expedition into an environmental disaster zone. Ex Machina star Oscar Isaac, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tessa Thompson, and Gina Rodriguez also have roles. The film is an adaptation of a book of the same name by Jeff VanderMeer which won the 2015 Nebula Award along with the 2014 Shirley Jackson Award for Best Novel.
From the look of this first teaser for the film, you can see that it should be a tense visual and atmospheric spectacle. There’s some breathtaking cinematography with a hint of the macabre. For those who haven’t read VanderMeer’s novel, there’s not much known about the upcoming film. The teaser maintains mystery behind the plot and we’re definitely excited to learn more about it going forward.
Annihilation is set for release on February 23rd, 2018. Check out the teaser trailer and comment below.
