At the end of December, we received our first look at Ridley Scott’s upcoming Prometheus/Alien sequel, Alien: Covenant. Now, a second trailer for the highly anticipated sci-fi horror film has been released.
As we stated in our coverage of the last trailer, Covenant is going to be an interesting film. After the ho-hum response to Prometheus, Ridley Scott claimed that there would be at least one sequel before they would link the story to the Alien series. Obviously, we know now that Scott decided to forego that option and shoot straight for an all new Alien film following the events of the prequel (Prometheus).
Keeping up with the theme of the last trailer, this one also has a lot of action in it. We get to see the full sized alien along with a facehugger and what looks to be a chestburster for a brief moment. While this is all well and good, it is a bit “samey.” Even the whole idea of the crew discovering the eggs on a new planet, an egg opening, the facehugger lunging at the screen, etc. was all done in the original 1979 film. It’s understandable that Scott would go back to what worked well the first time around, he should tread lightly in this film to not make the same movie. Though, the scene with the alien screeching while on top of the ship is pretty awesome.
Regardless, everything we’ve seen of Alien: Covenant thus far has looked particularly good. Ridley Scott is a bit hit or miss with his projects but, so far, this one is shaping up to be solid. The cast is full of diverse quality talent such as Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, James Franco, Danny McBride, Billy Crudup, Guy Pearce, and Noomi Rapace.
We won’t have to wait much longer to see how the film pans out. Alien: Covenant opens on May 19th. Check out the new trailer and comment below.
