The remake train keeps rolling. Every few years or so, someone sets out to remake an old western. Recently, the Coen brothers did it in 2010 with True Grit and James Mangold did it with 3:10 to Yuma back in 2007. This September will see the release of Antoine Fuqua’s The Magnificent Seven.
The film is about seven gunmen who unite to protect a village against a group of bandits. It was adapted from the 1960 film of the same name which starred Yul Brynner, Eli Wallach, Steve McQueen, and Charles Bronson. In turn, the 1960 film was actually based off of Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai from 1954. In the 2016 film, Chris Pratt, Denzel Washington, Ethan Hawke, and Vincent D’Onofrio star. The trailer looked like a lot of fun featuring some action sequences as well as some comedy. Also, with a quality main cast, there’s no reason that the acting shouldn’t be up to par.
As with the aforementioned remakes, there is a lot to be excited about with this new film. Although there haven’t been many westerns released over the past decade or so, each one has been surprisingly good. Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight and Django Unchained can also be lumped in when talking about quality westerns of the past few years. The Magnificent Seven hits theaters on September 23rd.
