Who would’ve thought that The Lego Batman Movie has a chance of being the best Batman film of the past year? Well, that could certainly be the case when it gets released in February 2017.
With Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad tanking fan’s hopes of a great DC Extended Universe, The Lego Batman Movie feels like a godsend. From the early trailers, it obviously doesn’t take itself too seriously, we get to see characters we love, and it just looks funny.
Will Arnett reprises his role as Batman/Bruce Wayne from The Lego Movie with Michael Cera, Rosario Dawson, Ralph Fiennes, and Zach Galifianakis as Robin/Dick Grayson, Batgirl/Barbara Gordon, Alfred Pennyworth, and The Joker respectively. A big portion of the movie seems that it will be about the relationship between Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson whom Wayne adopts.
The role of Robin plays as a young boy which is what he actually was in the original comics. In the Joel Schumacher-led films, Batman Forever and Batman & Robin, Robin was played by a mid-20’s Chris O’Donnell. Likewise, in The Dark Knight Rises, the “Robin” of that film was played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt who was 31 at the time. It’s refreshing to see that the filmmakers of The Lego Batman movie are treating the character as an actual kid this time around.
The Lego Movie was a huge success so it’s no surprise that Warner Bros. is going to capitalize with more spinoffs of the film. The Lego Movie also wasn’t the first appearance of Lego Batman himself. The character has received numerous Lego toy sets as well as his first of a handful of video games in 2008. On top of that, Lego Batman: The Movie – DC Super Heroes Unite was released on May 21, 2013. So, technically, this isn’t even the first official movie for the character. Though, the titles will be unrelated to one another.
The Lego Batman Movie is set for release on February 10, 2017. Check out the new trailer and comment below.
