With all of the recent science fiction epics that have been released over the past few years, it’s no surprise to see the genre making a big comeback. Films like Interstellar, Gravity, and The Martian have taken inspiration from past works of the 1960’s and 1970’s and spruced them up to today’s standards. This Christmas, Morten Tyldum, director of The Imitation Game, brings us a new sci-fi experience with Passengers.
The plot of the film revolves around Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence as their characters awaken in their sleep chambers 90 years ahead of schedule. They’re unable to put themselves back under and also must avert disaster to save the lives of thousands still in their sleep chambers.
At first glance, the plot has similarities to Interstellar and The Martian. In both of those films, there are space programs attempting to colonize distant planets which is also the mission in Passengers. Meanwhile, banking on two people to save the expedition is similar to the events of Gravity. However, Passengers does still feel like its own story at least from the look of the trailer. Having Pratt and Lawrence as the stars also helps immensely since they are both talented, young actors. Even in the trailer, they appear to have a good chemistry between them which this film will surely lean on. Laurence Fishburne and Michael Sheen, who plays an android, also have roles in the film.
Passengers is set to release in theaters on December 21st. Check out the trailer and comment below.
