As if there weren’t enough shows to be keeping up with, Netflix is set to premiere two more this month. Of course, we’ve already talked about Marvel’s Iron Fist series debuting on March 17th. Netflix has now released the first trailer for its new miniseries, 13 Reasons Why, which will premiere on March 31st.
The series is based off of the young adult fiction novel, Thirteen Reasons Why, by Jay Asher. It was released in 2007 before hitting #1 on the New York Times best seller list in 2011. The plot follows a high school student named Clay Jensen who discovers cassette tapes recorded by Hannah Baker. Hannah is Clay’s crush before she commits suicide citing thirteen reasons why she made her decision. She cites Clay as one of the reasons and he embarks on his own investigation as to the reason for Hannah’s suicide. Dylan Minnette and Katherine Langford were cast as Clay and Hannah respectively in the Netflix series.
Since there’s only one book, viewers shouldn’t expect 13 Reasons Why to be a long running series. In fact, it will run for thirteen episodes to which we can probably expect one reason for Hannah’s demise to be revealed per episode. While the plot of the miniseries definitely seems interesting, there is a little early cause for concern. Some of the scenes represented in the trailer feel a bit melodramatic and almost like a teen soap opera. This doesn’t necessarily doom the series but other similar high school dramas like The Invisible and If I Stay haven’t fared overly well in the past. That being said, though, Netflix has been pretty consistent with its content so there’s always the possibility that the series will be just fine.
Again, 13 Reasons Why premieres its thirteen episodes on March 31st exclusively on Netflix. Check out the trailer and comment below.
